How to Network at Your Office - The Muse
How to Network at Your Office - The MuseHow to Network at Your Office Throughout college, my mom told me I needed to network, to which I unfalteringly responded with mm hmm and a roll of my eyes. What could she possibly know about getting a job in the social media era?Almost three years post grad school, I will (slightly reluctantly) admit that nine times out of 10, it really is all about who you know. All those awkward alumni networking events, informational interviews, and cold emails do end up paying off. (Ugh, Mom, you win again.)That means if youre consistently networking, youre already on the right path- regardless of where you want that path to lead to next. But Id be willing to bet youre elend covering every base when it comes to increasing your professional circle. In fact, theres one obvious place you might never think to look- and its where you currently work. But why, you may ask, would I have one-on-one career conversations with people at my present day 9-to-5 unless it has to do with the job at hand? Well there are two big reasons.Youll Expand Your Network- Without Putting in Much EffortRight now, the majority of your colleagues (excluding those who are lucky enough to have become your friend) are probably just that to you- colleagues. The sole role you associate them with is the one they have at work. But just like you, each of your team members has most likely had experience prior to this job, meaning they, too, have an entire professional network you can tap into. When you open the door to that guy from the IT department, you also open the door to people he knows. This could include past co-workers, individuals he met from volunteering, or friends hes made through his soccer team. Not to mention his family members, as well as a variety of other people hes met throughout his life. So by grabbing coffee with him during the workday, youre not just learning more about his job, but youre also expanding your own six-degrees-of-separation network. May be you cant tap into that when youre trying to leave your current position (unless you get real close), but two jobs from now you certainly can.Take me for example When I was a graduate assistant, I mentioned off-hand to my boss that Id just learned about life coaching and wanted to know more about the field. Little did I know, both her aunt and a good friend of hers are life coaches. She connected me to both. Sure, more than three years later Im not pursuing that professionally, but I still have those connections should I choose that path one day. Youll Make Yourself More Valuable at Your Current JobNetworking isnt always about moving to the next company or landing your next gig. Yes, its obviously super helpful with that, especially when your application is one of 300. But it can also be equally as valuable with the position you have now, too. Its a great way to build new skills, improve current ones, explore areas of interest in a low-risk way, and build your reputation up in the office. When you take the time to learn about other teams and what they do on a daily basis, you may see an opportunity to fill a gap by utilizing a skill you have. This also works the opposite way. When you make an effort to reach out to people, they also get to know you, your capabilities, and your interests. So when they need assistance in their department, or even if they know another group that needs help, theyre more likely to suggest you take on the task. As you can guess, the more helpful you prove to be, the more your reputation will grow at the office as a talented and ambitious go-getter whos always willing to lend a hand. (Not a bad way to be known, especially during review-and-raise season)And if you need more proof, you dont have to look further than me. I love writing, but the majority of my job duties consist of numbers and PowerPoint presentations. After grabbing my morning coffee with a director in a different department and mentioning this fact, she reached out t o me to draft some content for a product she needed help with. Had she not known I was interested in doing more writing, I wouldnt have gotten this opportunity. And without that experience, I wouldnt have applied for an editorial internship at The Muse. So, next time you find yourself with some empty space on your schedule, reach out to someone you dont know well and ask him or her to go on a meet-and-greet coffee date, grab lunch, or join you for a walk. Get to know this individual- more about his or her position and what he or she did before. Worst-case scenario? You have another friendly face at work. Best? See above. Strategies for Saving Your Job After You Screw Up - The Muse
Strategies for Saving Your Job After You Screw Up - The MuseStrategies for Saving Your Job After You Screw Up So your performance review didnt quite go as expected, and now youre getting a bad feeling that you might be on the chopping block. While your mind jumps to conclusions about heading straight to the front of the unemployment line, there are more options than just accepting the writing on the wall. Here are some strategies for saving your job and using criticism to help shape you into a worker whose presence can hugely benefit the company. 1. Youre Slacking on the JobWere all guilty of over-promising and under-delivering on occasion, but youre likely aware of the difference between that and straight-up slacking. This probably comes as no surprise, but poor job performance is one of the top reasons employees are fired. It seems so obvious, yet your smartphone, the internet, and social media all make it so easy to fall prey to distraction. But trust me, spending too much of the w orkday on social media isnt likely to help you rack up any likes from your colleagues or supervisors in the near future. How to Turn it AroundThe worst thing about slacking is that you inevitably build a reputation of being lazy. And once youve earned the label, it can be hard to shake off. Hopefully, though, the fear that you might potentially lose your job will be enough to inspire change. First you need to identify the root of the problem. Is it really just those pesky distractions like social media that are disrupting your workflow, or does it go deeper? Low motivation to complete certain tasks or duties can be a major issue and can hold you back from being successful even as you exceed expectations in other areas of the job. Figure out what responsibilities youre having a hard time meeting, and then devise a plan to help keep you on track for getting your work done (these questions can help you get started on that). It could be something as simple as reversing your order of ope rations so you do the work you like least when youre feeling fruchtwein productive. You cant change hearts and minds overnight, but if you find a consistent work groove that helps you deliver real results, eventually your slacker reputation (and that rumor you might be let go) will begin to fade. 2. You Failed to Deliver an Important Project on TimeYour Wi-Fi went out, you got in a huge fight with your significant other, Starbucks botched your morning coffee, and so on. Whatever the reason, little things in life can add up and keep us from getting our work done. When you miss a deadline, its easy to get ahead of yourself, panic and think your professional life is over (if you do, thats good- it means you care). We dont always hit our mark, and thats OK sometimes. But lose sight of too many due dates and youll find yourself in the hot seat in a jiffy. How to Turn it AroundFirst and foremost, take responsibility when you miss a deadline. Let your manager know that you understand the b usiness impact when you dont deliver your work on time, and then lay out a solution to prevent it from happening again. Come up with a plan to help you snag some quick, easy wins before you start developing a reputation around the office for missing deadlines. And definitely dont point the finger at anyone else. If theres one thing employers like less than someone who is unreliable, its someone who doesnt take accountability for their actions (or in this case, lack thereof). Plus, throwing your co-workers under the bus makes you generally unpleasant to work with and is way more likely to get you fired than any individual missed deadline. 3. You Got Into an Argument With an Unruly Client, and Now Theyre Threatening to Take Their Business ElsewhereYou give them special attention, make 11th hour revisions per their request, and take urgent weekend calls on the reg- but no matter how much effort and time you sink into their business, you just cant seem to make them happy. If youve worke d with a difficult client before, this situation probably sounds all too familiar. When tired and stressed, your natural human instinct is to bounce into action, stand up, and fight for your work. But no matter how in the right you might be, you arent likely to win an argument with a customer- and now your little outburst has your client reaching out to your higher-ups threatening to pull their business. How to Turn it AroundThe first thing you should do is ask yourself how big of a screw-up this was. Talk to your teammates honestly about what happened. Get an opinion you can trust on whether you were crossing the line or just sticking up for your team. Next, look to asses the business impact. Was this client simply one of hundreds, or a quarter of your companys revenue? Finally, come up with a strategy to explain it to you boss. Share your side of the story and any relevant facts to back-up your case, but most importantly tell the truth. You were brought on board for a reason, and y our manager will respect you candor- even if you just lost a big chunk of business. 4. You Were Spreading Some Unsavory Company Gossip- and Got CaughtEvery office has its gossip (and a group of workers whove gained a reputation for spreading it around). Knowing the perils, you tried to steer clear of that crew. But despite your initial best efforts to avoid it, you somehow got wind of an unflattering secret about a colleague. Word got out about the rumor and who spread it, and now the entire company (not to mention your boss) thinks you are the source of all the gossip. Forget that opportunity for a promotion next month, now youre just worried about holding onto the job have. How to Turn it AroundThe most difficult part about bouncing back after being outed as an office gossiper is regaining the trust of your peers and supervisors. Many managers view this kind of talk as poisoning the company culture, and might now see you as a potential liability. Whether this was your first time o r youre a routine offender, once youve been caught youll probably only going to get one gelegenheit to change before your boss starts looking for your replacement (and if the rumor was really malicious, you may not even get that). More than just holding onto a job here, its important to be an actual good person and offer a sincere apology to the subject of the gossip (especially if its embarrassing). You also definitely want to have a conversation with your supervisor to explain that you understand the severity of this type of behavior and make it clear that it wont happen again. The best way to keep to keep yourself off the unemployment list is to avoid falling behind in the first place (or getting caught up in an unfortunate interpersonal issue). Be proactive about your work before your get that poor performance review. But once youve gotten some candid feedback on where you stand, you can mucksmuschenstill turn things around by taking it to heart and communicating with your manag er about where to go from here. After all, if they really wanted you out then youd already be gone. If theyre still bringing you in on company meetings, assigning you new responsibilities, and giving you coaching- then they see your value and want you to step up to the plate and succeed.

Advancing Your Career in the Midst of Workplace Stress
Advancing Your Career in the Midst of Workplace Stress Advancing Your Career in the Midst of Workplace Stress 1. Define Your Career Mission and Pursue ItThis habit can be approached in a couple of ways. Philosophically, it challenges you to discover the unique role best suited to your talents, interests, and values, and it motivates you to succeed. However, your career mission is also simply represented by your job description. The happiest professionals are those who understand their work and what it takes to do a good job.2.Be Visible and Express Expectations of RewardsYou must make sure that management notices when you do good work and understands that you expect to be rewarded for your achievements. Employees frequently assume that their bosses know whats best when it comes to career advancement and that doing a really good job will automatically be acknowledged. Unfortunately, the truth is that many workers only generate attention when theyre a problem. If you really want to adv ance your career, you have to ask for what you want. Your manager isnt a mind reader, and waiting quietly to be recognized is the path to being passed over for a promotion.3.View Your Job as a Long-Term Consulting Assignment, Not a Permanent PlacementBecause organizations no longer guarantee lifetime employment, its important think of yourself as a contractor with a portfolio instead of a treulich employee. Your focus should beondoing excellent work, learning as much as possible from each position, and being ready to change jobs should the need arise.4.Take Some RisksDont spend time waiting for recognition. Develop an explicit career path and turn management into your partner in advancing your career.5.Go with Your InstinctsTrust your intuition as you plot your career. Logic has its place in the decision-making process, but whole-brained thinking will give you a balanced perspective on your career advancement that intellectual analysis alone cannot.6.Never Stop NetworkingA well-deve loped professional network can be a rich source of mentors and referrals for everything you need in your life. Your network can also provide objective insights for evaluating opportunities and problems. A solid network of contacts is valuable no matter the circumstances.7. Negotiate and CooperateThe next time you are in a mood to take no prisoners, put yourself in your adversarys place. Suggest solutions that benefit both you and your coworkers. Even if you dont receive exactly what you want in the short term, you wont be stuck with long-term enemies.8.Be Confident, Even when You ArentIf you find yourself suffering from a crisis of confidence, remember that positive behavior can overtake negativity and pull you out of your rut. Yourbehavior not what youre feeling on the inside is what others see. Use your anxiety as an extra source of energy.9.Chase Only Those Goals That You Actually DesireWhen you begin to set goals to help advance your career, try testing their viability using th e RUMBA method Each goal should be Reasonable, Understandable, Measurable, Behavioral, and Agreed Upon. Meeting only the first four conditions isnt enough. You and everyone involved with your goal must agree that its a good idea. Goals should begin with I want, not I should10. Live a Life of Work, Education, and FunLiving a life where these things are divided into different stages (e.g. learning as a child, working as an adult, having fun after retirement) leads to a stale existence and forces people to feel useless without their jobs. Never forget how to learn and enjoy yourself.

Common Characteristics of the Traditionalists Generation
Common Characteristics of the Traditionalists GenerationCommon Characteristics of the Traditionalists GenerationTraditionalists are known as the silent generation because children of this era were expected to be seen and not heard. Theyre those who were born between 1927 and 1946, and they average in age from 75 to 80 years old in 2018. Most of them have retired from the workforce, and those who remain can be expected to work fewer hours. Characteristics of Silent Generation Professionals Traditionalists are generally partners, managers, and senior support staff in the legal workplace, although some might sign on as part-time administrative staff just to keep busy after retirement. Silent generation attorneys often serve of counselto law firms. Theyve technically retired, but they maintain a close relationship with the firm and they can be called upon for their expertise on a case-by-case basis. The Silent Generation Is Hardworking The silent generation brought the strong wor k ethic of their parents into the factories of industrialized society. They grew up during lila drink times, including the Great Depression and World War II. They consider work a privilege and it shows- theyre considered the wealthiest generation. Traditionalists believe that you earn your own way through hard work. Long, grueling hours in their prime enabled them to get ahead in their legal careers, and they think others should do the same. This generation believes that promotions and advancement should be the result of tenure and proven productivity. They distrust flash-in-the-pan successes. They Have Willpower Adversity doesnt daunt the silent generation. They tend to be dogged and determined, willing to go the distance even if they have to dig deep for the strength to do so. Again, they survived the Great Depression. Many of them had to toughen up and bear down to earn a living in those days to simply survive. They were often forced to take jobs that didnt necessarily appeal to them. They took what work was available...if and when it was available, and they were grateful for it. You wont find a traditionalist stomping off in a huff and quitting to grab the next available job that comes along. Traditionalists Are Loyal Employees Traditionalists are civic-minded and loyal to their country and to their employers. In fact, they still register as the largest voting population in the U.S. Unlike Generation Y and Generation Xworkers, many traditionalists have stayed with the same employer throughout their entire working lives. Theyre less likely to change jobs to advance their careers than younger generations, but they expect the same loyalty in return. They Respect Authority Raised in a paternalistic environment, the silent generation was taught to respect authority. Conformity and conservatism are prized. They tend to be good team players. They generally dont ruffle feathers or initiate conflict in the workplace, and they like to feel needed. Waste Not, Want Not Traditionalists tend to be thrifty. These are not folks who are going to trade their cars in every few years. Theyll diligently maintain what they own to extend the propertys lifespan. Of course, this can become annoying in the workforce, particularly for Millennials who arent inclined to dry out a sheet of paper towel for reuse later. The Silent Generation Can Be Tech-Challenged Dont expect your silent generation employee to be a whiz at operating his new smartphone.Of all the generationsactive in todays workplaces, traditionalists are the slowest to change their work habits and to adapt to new, mora efficient ways of doing things. This is particularly the case when those efficient ways involve technology. Traditionalists might struggle to learn new technology as it evolves and changes the practice of law, and theymight try your younger staffs patience with the need for ongoing instruction in this area. The flip side is that they often have great one-on-one inte rpersonal skills because theyre more accustomed to dealing with people eye-to-eye. Theyve honed their abilities to use this to their advantages. Theyre Traditional Traditionalists value old-time morals, safety, security, and consistency. They have more respect for brick-and-mortar educational institutions and traditional lecture formats than online, web-based education and training. This generation favors conventional business models in the legal workplace and a top-down chain of command. Work ethic and reliability are important to them.

As a mature-age worker you may worry about age discrimination, especially if you have experienced it in the past. But dont let that faze you. Here are some tips on approaching the interview with energy and strategy so you can shine and prove that you are the right applicant for the job.PreparePreparation is the key to a successful interview. It is vital that you research the company which is interviewing you so you can answer their questions from an informed position and project the right image to align with their culture and the role that youre applying for.Read up on possible job interview questions and prepare your answers using concrete examples from your past. Make notes and be sure to reiterate and elaborate on the strengths youve highlighted in your resume and cover letter. To state more of the obvious, be sure to arrive on time and prepared, armed with an extra copy of your resume and any other supporting documentation you may require. And be sure to turn your mobile phone off before you go into the interview Even if you feel disadvantaged by your age, dont let it show. Walk into the interview with a confident smile, stand tall, give a firm handshake, and exude positivity and energy so everyone can see that you are confident, competent, willing to learn and embrace change, and will work well with others including younger colleagues. When you walk into an interview, employers can spot frustration and despondency a mile off, warns Phil Hatchard of Adage, a website which caters to mature-age workers and mature-age-friendly employers. Why Professionals Should Practice Like Athletes and Actors
Why Professionals Should Practice Like Athletes and Actors Why Professionals Should Practice Like Athletes and Actors In the business world, things move fast. You write a business proposal, seek approval, and move on to your next project. Efficiency is key. Waste little time. Produce as much as possible. I recently had a wonderful opportunity to share my personal career story at a TEDx event in Worthington, Ohio. Giving a TEDx talk was a huge honor, but also a big responsibility. I wanted to be prepared â" and not the kind of prepared that Ive been in the past when Ive delivered a PowerPoint presentation whipped up for an executive meeting. But what does being prepared for something like TED mean? Fortunately, I had a great team of folks around me to serve as advisers, including a professional speaking coach, a professional speech writer, and a great TEDx team. I honestly couldnt have felt more proud to have such a great group working with me. What I quickly found was that preparing for a 15-minute memorized talk was an entirely different animal from preparing for an average business presentation. For the first time, I had a script. I didnt just write that script once â" I wrote and revised it 10 times. Each time, the team would have feedback. Perhaps one word didnt sound quite right, or maybe another sentence was needed to bridge two thoughts. Then came practicing. Memorizing eight pages of text is not easy. That was the first giant hill I had to conquer. Once the memorization was under control, I focused on my delivery. Even tiny details like the regional pronunciation of words were on the table for discussion. Ill be honest: At times, this level of commitment was trying. Then, one day, I bumped into a professional ballet dancer at the theater where I was practicing. He was there by himself, practicing his dance skills. You might think this was a sign that he had a big production just around the corner, but it wasnt. He was there practicing because he wanted to be his best at all times. He had discipline. In that moment, it really hit me how hard actors and athletes work when no one is watching. They are dedicated to be the best at one specific thing, for the 15 minutes when people are watching. Hours of tiring practice have gone into that perfect moment â" practice that nobody else sees. My TEDx experience made me wonder how much more effective and efficient we all might be as business leaders if we set aside a little more time to practice. Rather than planning to give a presentation once with no rehearsal, what if we took the time to hone our message? I hope to take my newfound respect for performers and athletes with me as I go back to my projects in the fast-paced business world. New study debunks commonly held beliefs about exercise and mortality
New study debunks commonly held beliefs about exercise and mortality New study debunks commonly held beliefs about exercise and mortality We all know that itâs important to lead an active life. There are all kinds of benefits - from better thinking skills to improved overall health. But it can sometimes feel really overwhelming to fit a new fitness routine into your day, and overall, Americans arenât very good at exercise. Only 3% of us sit for less than four hours a day and exercise regularly, according to Time. And with so much of our time spent in offices, who can blame us?Thankfully, a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology has broken ground on how we can improve our health in small ways, one step at a time. Researchers found that even light activity like walking for 30 minutes a day can lower mortality risk by 17%, which seems like something most of us could achieve.Study co-author Keith Diaz, an assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center, told Time that âexercise doesnât have to be done for hours at a time. Itâs something that anyone can do. It just requires walking, even for short periods of time.âOf course, the results are better if you exercise more, or more vehemently. Diaz and his colleagues assessed how light intensity or moderate to vigorous physical activity differed in terms of their impact on mortality risk. When people did a moderate or vigorous workout for 30 minutes every day, they had a 35% lower mortality risk. But we all need a place to start. And for those who feel 30 minutes is too long, even smaller increments can make a difference.âWe used to think that exercise had to be done at a moderate or vigorous intensity. We used to think it had to be done in 10 minutes or more at a time,â Diaz told Time. âOur results kind of shift the narrative a bit. A one-minute burst here and a one-minute burst there actually can still be healthful.âSo instead of going for that 5K during your first workout in three months, maybe baby steps are a good way to start. Even they help. Then, you can build up to that hour-long, vigorous workout. But take heart in knowing that wherever you start, itâs better than the alternative of a sedentary lifestyle.

The Interview Process and Beyond
The Interview Process and Beyond The Interview Process and Beyond The Interview Process and Beyond Your preparation for the interview equips you with a number of interview questions that will help you get to know and evaluate candidates. But theres plenty more to do before, during and after the interview to ensure your success. Follow these tips: Before the Interview Put candidates at ease: Interviewing can be stressful, so do your best to help candidates relax. Make sure each candidate is greeted and escorted, if necessary, to the interview location. Start with low-key questions. Dont judge on first impressions: Weve all met them people who dont make a great first impression but end up being great employees. To make sure you dont overlook these diamonds in the rough, withhold judgment until youve had the chance to thoroughly evaluate a candidates capabilities and potential. During the Interview Tell the candidate a little about the job: While you dont want to dominate the interview time, you should start with a brief summary of the position, including the prime responsibilities, reporting structure, key challenges, and performance criteria. This will help the candidate provide relevant examples and responses. Dont be afraid to improvise: Plan your questions, but dont feel you must ask only those youve chosen in advance. Be responsive to what the candidate tells you, and build new questions off their answers, says Shelly Goldman, executive recruiter with The Goldman Group Advantage, an executive recruiting firm in Reston, Virginia. Listen: If you are doing most of the talking during theinterview process, you will not be able to obtain enough information to distinguish between candidates or to determine a candidates true competencies. A general guideline is to spend 80 percent of your time listening and only 20 percent talking. Take notes: While you wont want to transcribe everything the candidate says, do write down important points, key accomplishments, good examples, and other information that will help you remember and fairly evaluate each candidate. An interview guide, prepared in advance, will make note-taking easier and give you a structure for capturing key information. Invite candidates to ask questions during the interview process: This can be the most valuable part of the interview. Why do they want to be here is it the challenge of the job, advances in the industry, or something specific about your company? Or is the candidate fixated on salary, benefits, and time off? If the candidate has no questions this should be a red flag, especially for senior-level employees. Make a note of what the candidate asks, and be sure to follow up if you cant provide the answer immediately. Follow legal interviewing guidelines: It is critically important that every interviewer at your company, from HR clerks to top executives, understand and follow legal hiring guidelines. The easiest way to keep your interviews fully compliant is to ask only questions that relate to the job, eliminating the potential for bias by not introducing questions or scenarios that will elicit irrelevant information. After the Interview Let candidates know what they can expect: A pet peeve of many job seekers is that they are left hanging after an interview, or they are promised follow-up that never comes. If the candidate is a good fit, be clear about what the next steps will be. And if the candidate is not a good fit? Always end the interview on a positive note, but be genuine, says Goldman. Dont tell the candidate to call you if you dont mean it. Compare notes and reach consensus: The post-interview evaluation is the time to compare notes and advance the hiring decision. Each interviewer should be prepared to back up remarks and recommendations with specific examples and notes from the interview. Deepen the questions as you narrow the field: Subsequent interviews with finalists are valuable opportunities to learn more about them. Consider adding show me exercises such as a strategic planning exercise or a walk me through what youd do activity involving a real business challenge the individual would be facing. Create a Positive Image for Your Organization Joan Woodward, AVP and Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Fifth Third Bank, remarks that the job market is always competitive when looking for good people. We need to realize that were selling ourselves as much as candidates are trying to sell themselves. Its important to treat people well during the interview process. I never want to lose a potential customer or cause a candidate to have a negative impression of our company. Your interview process reflects the value your company places on each candidate and, by extension, each employee. Be a good ambassador for your company by conducting a professional interview, communicating honestly, and basing hiring decisions on an honest evaluation of each candidates capabilities. The Invalidated Data Sharing Pact and Technical Recruiting
The Invalidated Data Sharing Pact and Technical Recruiting The Invalidated Data Sharing Pact and Technical Recruiting The Invalidated Data Sharing Pact and Technical Recruiting Rossheim Who in America cares that the European Court of Justice in early October invalidated a longstanding data sharing pactthat has enabled transatlantic data transmissions? Hiring managers at Apple, Google, Facebook and thousands of smaller U.S.-based companies should care, as the ruling may mean they need to hire more data scientists or fewer. As uncertain as the consequences may be right now, its critical for employers to monitor the fallout and adjust their IT recruitment strategy accordingly. The Safe Harbor Process The safe harbor process ruling says that existing U.S. data-privacy safeguards are insufficient. This could force American companies to cease, or to re-engineer at considerable cost, the international transmission of personal data ranging from email addresses to financial information to the consumer behavior. Small firms could be forced to curtail their European operations; mid-sized concerns could also be hard-hit. European Union countries have been even slower to recover from the 2008-2009 recession than the United States, and Europe is famished for jobs. The ECJ action could lay a protectionist cover over certain niches of the continents labor market, including data scientists. What it Means for IT Recruitment This ruling could also mean more jobs stay in Europe, says Russell Walker, clinical associate professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and consultant on big data and business strategy. Still, some of these IT jobs could go to Americans at least those who find a way to legally work in EU countries. Apple, Microsoft, and other companies may find that merging their data is impermissible under the ruling, so they have to build separate teams in Europe and the United States, which would create more jobs, Walker says. If companies do need to bring on more analytic talent to cope with the EU ruling, theyll encounter a steep technical recruiting challenge. Data honchos, especially chief data scientists, are hard to come by, and they need a very broad range of skills, from the technical to the executive. Whats unique about a data scientist is that theyre very likely part of a centralized, cross-functional team, because its about operations and product development, not just marketing, says Walker. Data scientists are expensive and uncommon in the labor marketplace. And you need a chief data scientist to decide what problems the team will work on. Technical Recruiting Strategies Companies seeking out data gurus as part of their IT recruiting will be disappointed if they settle for brainiacs who arent comfortable sitting down with a variety of functional leads. Data scientists task will be to relate what they learn from data to the business, says Walker. Its quite uncommon to find someone who can live both in the science and in the business. They need to communicate very well. Another major challenge for data-science recruiters is more fundamental: to understand enough about the concepts and vocabulary of big data and analytics to convince candidates of the companys commitment to this emergent discipline. To attract qualified IT professionals, companies need to be aware of tools and technologies that analytic talent uses, says Walker.

5 Tricks for Running Effective Meetings
5 Tricks for Running Effective Meetings 5 Tricks for Running Effective Meetings Make each minute count during your next business meeting by applying these simple rules.Weâve all heard the adage, âtime is money.â In todayâs workplace, every minute counts. Unfortunately for many professionals, too many of those minutes are spent sitting in long, drawn-out meetings where little is accomplished. In fact, in its annual Wasting Time at Work Survey,â Salary.com reported that 26 percent of respondents said the biggest overall time-wasting activity was having too many meetings and conference calls.Yet Patrick Lencioni, author of the best-seller â Death by Meeting,â believes that meetings arenât inherently bad. Lencioni argues that when meetings are given the proper context and purpose, they can become meaningful, engaging and relevant activities in the workplace.Below are a few tips to turn your most painful meetings into productive gatherings:Establish clear goals Itâs important that everyone invited to the meeting understands its purpose. Include a on e-sentence blurb in your invitation that clarifies what the meeting is about and what will be discussed so everyone is on the same page. When appropriate, create an agenda â" and stick to it. When you set clear expectations, itâs easier to keep the conversation on track and within the allotted time.Keep your attendee list leanTake a page from some of the most successful organizations and keep your meetings small. For instance, Larry Page implemented a 10-person limit to Googleâs meetings. Every person should contribute to the conversation; otherwise they shouldnât attend the meeting. Similarly, Amazonâs CEO Jeff Bezos uses a âtwo pizzaâ rule to ensure the right people attended his meetings. He believes that groups should be small enough that it only takes two pizzas to feed every person involved. Reassess your list of attendees before sending out your next meeting invitation.Stick to 30 minutes or lessGranted, not all meetings are created equally. Some, like a strategic planning session, will require more space on your calendar. However, when it comes to those frequent staff meetings and daily check-ins, your best bet is to limit the meetingâs length to 30 minutes or less (many reports suggest 15 minutes is the ideal meeting length). Research shows most peopleâs attention spans range between 10-18 minutes. Anything longer than that and your audience checks out of the conversation. In addition, these time restraints will force the attendees to organize their thoughts. If youâre having difficulty ending your meetings on time, try using a free online stopwatch like this one or opt for the device Google Venturesâ Jake Knapp relies upon, the Time Timer.Limit distractions from technologyIn quick, efficient business meetings, you shouldnât have time to check your phone for text messages or emails. Not only does this take away from the focus of the meeting, but itâs considered poor etiquette by many professionals. A study from the University o f Southern Californiaâs Marshall School of Business found that 75 percent of respondents believe itâs inappropriate to read texts or emails during formal meetings. Consider creating a policy where attendees silence their phones and stow them away during meetings.Assign responsibility for tasks and decisionsAt the end of the meeting, assign every action item to what Steve Jobs and Apple call a DRI or âDirectly Responsible Individual.â This simple concept makes accountability clear and directs people with questions to the right individual, ensuring each project runs more smoothly. This process is also a great way to recap the important takeaways from the meeting. In the end, productive meetings require some careful thought and planning. Once you determine the purpose behind your meetings, it will be easier to apply these rules and transform your bad meetings into productive and actionable conversations.

Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano Technology
Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano Technology Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano Technology Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano Technology A more stable, accurate and powerful gyroscope no larger than a grain of rice could soon make its way into wearable devices, nano platforms, and other applications. Gyroscopes enable vehicles, aircraft, robots, wearable, and other electronic devices to determine location in three-dimensional space. In most cases, the data is generated by microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS) that measure differences in the forces that act on oscillating masses moving in opposite directions. But those gyroscopes have several limitations, including their sensitivity to such factors as vibration and temperature. Listen to ASME TechCast: Shining a New Light on Solar Farms and Grids Top Story: The Critical Need for 5G Cellular Service To counter this, optical gyroscopes were developed and made with no moving parts. Most of them are smaller and more accurate than MEMS gyroscopes, making them good candidates for miniaturization and nanophotonic platforms. But even the smallest high-performance optical gyroscopes available today are too large for many portable applications. Another drawback is their signal-to-noise ratio, which is generally limited by thermal fluctuations, component drift, and fabrication mismatch. Due to those drawbacks and others, integrated nanophotonic optical gyroscopes have yet to be developed. That could change. Schematic of nanophotonic optical gyroscope. Image: Ali Hajimiri / Caltech Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have taken a big step toward making those tiny gyroscopes a reality. Led byelectrical and medical engineering professor Ali Hajimiri, the team developed a proof-of-concept optical gyroscope that is 500 times smaller than current state-of-the-art devices, or about the size of a grain of rice. It is also vastly superior in precision, being able to detect phase shifts that are 30 times smaller than what current systems can detect, enhancing its performance by one to two orders of magnitude. Optical gyroscopes measure the rate of rotation by detecting differences in two paths of lighta phenomenon known as the Sagnac effect. A beam of light is split into twin beams which travel in opposite directions along a circular pathway and meet at the same light detector. Because light travels at a constant speed, rotation causes one of the beams to arrive at the detector before the other. This phase shift is then used to calculate orientation. Hajimiris all-integrated, nanophotonic optical gyroscope achieves its improvements through reciprocal sensitivity enhancement. In this technique, reciprocal means that both beams of light are affected the same way. In Hajimiris gyroscope, light moves through miniaturized optical waveguides, which are small conduits about 200 nanometers tall, or about three times the width of a human hair - that carry light, acting in the same way as wires that carry electricity. Imperfections in the optical path that could affect the light beams - such as thermal fluctuations, light scattering, and other interference affect both beams in the same way. Our proof-of-concept device is capable of detecting phase shifts 30 times smaller than state of-the-art miniature fiber-optic gyroscopes, despite being 500 times smaller in size. Ali Hajimiri, California Institute of Technology Hajimiris team found a way to extract reciprocal noise while leaving signals from the Sagnac effect in place. That enhances the gyroscopes reciprocal sensitivity, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Those improvements enable the integration of the gyroscope onto such a small chip. The lab built the system using silicon nanophotonics, which is an ideal platform for implementing optical gyroscopes on the microscale due to its reliability and compatibility with current mass production techniques, Hajimiri said. It also provides the capability of integrating nanophotonic and electrical components onto a single substrate, which helps with commercialization and controlling costs. The optical gyroscope has no moving parts, making it an extremely robust system. System dimensions are 2 by 1 by 2 millimeters. The build process deploys lithography to stack and pattern several ultra-thin layers of silicon and silicon-dioxide. The only thing that moves inside the gyroscope are photons that travel at the speed of light in a pair of very small loops hundreds of billions of times every second, Hajimiri said. Extremely small changes in path length due to rotation can be measured. The greatest challenge in designing the system was accurate detection of variations in the optical path due to rotation, while minimizing sensitivity to thermal fluctuations and drifts. We did this by employing a technique we refer to as reciprocal sensitivity enhancement, where the light travels in two opposite orientations [clockwise and counterclockwise] in two loops for half of the cycle, and then travels in the opposite direction for the other half, Hajimiri said. This way the effect of non-idealities in the system can be cancelled, while the signal is amplified. Tests show theproof-of-concept device is capable of detecting phase shifts 30 times smaller than state of-the-art miniature fiber-optic gyroscopes, despite being 500 times smaller in size. Thus, our approach is capable of enhancing the performance of optical gyroscopes by one to two orders of magnitude, Hajimiri said. The team is already working to develop the next-generation of its current prototype. The level of interest we have received so far is very high, Hajimiri said. Many parties have shown interest in working with us toward further development of this technology. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. When it Comes to Job Listings, Location Matters
When it Comes to Job Listings, Location Matters When it Comes to Job Listings, Location Matters When companies sell their product, they promote their product where their target customer will most likely see it. For example, advertisements for toys are usually found on childrenâs TV networks like Nickelodeon, not The History Channel. The same concept applies to promoting your job listing. Your ideal candidate for the position has a certain place where they actively seek jobs, and you should be where they are. Job Fairs A job affair is the ultimate place to meet job seekers in person. Just make sure youâre attending the right one. If you have mostly mid-level or senior roles that youâre trying to fill, it wouldnât make sense to go to a career fair at a college or university. Networking events are also great places to meet active job seekers. A lot of people are trying to expand their networks to find jobs, so you will meet people looking for jobs at industry networking events. Professional Group Sites Professional groups that usually hold networking events allow companies to post job listings on their site. The American Marketing Association has a job board that features jobs for all types of levels and functions in marketing. Another example is SHRMâs job page, which lists jobs from all across the country and career stages. Both professional groups have a âfeatured jobâ section that calls out a handful of jobs in a prominent place on the page. If youâre thinking of advertising your job listing on a professional group site, it would be in your best interest to pay extra to be featured because most people donât go past the second page when looking at search results. General Career Sites The best place to advertise your job listing, and the place that will get you the most eyes, are job search sites like SimplyHired.com. Job seekers are able to customize their search by keywords, so making sure your job listing has the keywords that will match the words a potential candidate might search is important. Like professional group sites, if you want your job listing to get the most views and clicks, you should definitely consider making it a featured or sponsored job. Some 72 percent of job seekers donât go beyond the first page of the search results, and featured jobs get eight times more clicks than organic jobs. Besides being at the top of the page, job seekers are more likely to click a featured job because it shows that the company is actively looking, and theyâre less likely to apply to a job post that wonât send them a response to their job inquiry. The hardest part is figuring out where your ideal potential candidate would look for a job. If youâre posting your job on a website, itâs important to remember how much more traffic featured or sponsored jobs get versus jobs in organic search. The worst thing that can happen is an awesome candidate missing your job listing because itâs on the second page of a search.
