Indispensable By Monday

College, Career, Life Career and life planning assets for faculty students, current grads, and profession-changers. Primary Menu Book Review: Indispensable by Monday Andrea I just completed reading Indispensable by Monday, a brand new guide about revenue producing behaviors workers can use to assist their firms and themselves. Author Larry Myler is the CEO of More or Less, Inc., a consulting agency that focuses on revenue enhancement. For the book, Myler surveyed 1800 company leaders about what makes an worker indispensable. Part one details Myler’s survey outcomes, together with the proportion of corporate leaders that rate a given behavior as advantageous. My favourite a part of the guide is the Personal P&L Statement for quantifying your worth. You don’t want a monetary background to prepare your assertion â€" it’s simple for anybody to create and can profit your career it doesn't matter what your expertise degree or job title. In addition, a free Profit Proposal Generator (PPG) on Myler’s web site turns your concepts from the guide into skilled-looking proposals. In half two, “Pulling Money out of Thin Air”, fifteen revenue sourc es are recognized. From price chopping procedures to recovering lost prospects, the strategies in this part are straightforward to behave upon no matter your job function. The first revenue supply, price chopping, tells how to economize on a wide range of bills. One instance was of a janitor who discovered a way to saved his company $30,000 per yr in cleansing expenses. You’ll find out how utilities billing works, how to shorten the cash conversion cycle, and much more sensible info few staff bother to study. Although most of this section is about increasing earnings and lowering prices in your firm, Myler writes concerning the importance of interpersonal communication. However, he is trustworthy about the truth that good delicate abilities alone received’t make you indispensible. The sections partly three embody choosing high value options, improved efficiency appraisals, how to enhance gross sales, and advice for these in leadership roles. There are several examples of resume entries that showcase profit-enhancing solutions, in addition to tips on the way to present your accomplishments at a efficiency evaluate utilizing techniques from the book. The last part partially three is entitled “Everything You Need to Know about Accounting- and It’s Not Much”. Familiarity with monetary statements important for each worker and, based on Myler’s survey, company leaders agree. The impression I obtained whereas studying was that, not like many books in this category, the focus is on practical abilities and knowledge versus delicate expertise and workplace politics. You’ll uncover methods for making ameasurable distinction at your company and it applies to all staff, from new graduates to skilled professionals. Not each suggestion might be related to you proper now, especially should you’re an entry-level employee, but there must be no less than one or two strategies that will prove useful to you and to your employer. The other techniques can be saved fo r whenever you achieve extra experience or if your job duties change. What a Candidate Pipeline Has to Do with Flossing Dental Hygiene - Workology

What a Candidate Pipeline Has to Do with Flossing Dental Hygiene Building a Talent Pipeline is Just like Flossing Candidate pipelines are great except we never really think about them until its already too late. Building a talent pipelines is a lot like flossing. You always forget and dont do a good job remembering to take care of your pearly whites until that dental appointment looms on your calendar just two short weeks away. With the current technology available, building a talent pipeline are less expensive and less time consuming than they ever were before. Back in 2007, I built my talent pipeline using a referral network using email, an iPod prize giveaway and an Excel spreadsheet. I hate going to the dentist although Ive never had cavity problems with my teeth. Its the flossing, the mouth washing and tooth brushing that wasnt a chore. But once I discovering things like water picks and electric toothbrushes, I was more productive and effective with 4 minutes (2 in the morning and 2 in the evening). Building a Talent Pipeline is Just like Flossing Dental hygiene is just like talent pipelines in that the strategy is a preventative one. Finding and recruiting great talent at your company will never be going away. It happens on occasion, and when that time comes, recruiters and hiring managers who take a strategic approach to building their pipeline of candidates before an opening comes to fruition make for happier employees, managers and recruiters because there are time for things like expectations and understanding. Recruiting Candidates is a Moving Target Recruiting and staffing numbers are a moving targeting making scaling a priority. Scaling in situations when it comes your talent pipeline are certainly a concern as I mentioned when your staffing numbers for the upcoming year or quarter are constantly fluctuating. This fluctuation is the reason that recruiting teams should really consider an ongoing recruitment funnel regardless if there is a job opening now or at a future point in time at your company. Make candidate pipeline building a regular part of your strategy because we are in fact always recruiting and must of our position openings are cyclical, predictable and yet ever changing. Schedule regular check ups with your hiring managers  and division leaders for staffing planning, checking in and understanding their own numbers forecasting. Preventative approach is best.  I personally, always feel a little guilty when I meet with the dentist or hygienist fully knowing I just starting flossing last week.  While Im a fan of adrenaline and the rush you get when you meet and exceed deadlines, Im not a fan of doing interviews the day after Thanksgiving because our staffing headcount changed by 75 December 1.

3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea

3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea 3 Reasons Why B-School Visits Are a Good Idea By EssaySnarkWhy is visiting schools before applying for your MBA so significant? Here are a few inquiries to consider:Would you purchase a vehicle without test-driving it first? We're not the first to utilize this similitude, yet it works. Applying for a MBA program without visiting initially resembles purchasing a vehicle without any inspection. (Derrick Bolton, Stanford's head of affirmations, really likens it to purchasing a housethe cost of educational cost in addition to the open door cost of previous a pay for a long time.) B-school is a MUCH greater investmentand more life-changingthan any new vehicle will ever be. In case you're going to drop six figures on your alumni instruction, why not make good a brief period and cash ahead of time to look at how that speculation may function for you?Do you truly comprehend what the school is all about? You probably won't get it just from perusing their sites, however every MBA program really is extraordinary. School visits can not just give you a vibe for the grounds, the teachers and the understudies, they can likewise give you significant bits of knowledge from the confirmations officials when you go to a data meeting. These experiences can assist you with composing your papers. All schools need to realize why you've picked them. You'll have to clarify it in your articles and your meeting. Everybody needs to go to Harvard, since it's Harvard. The candidates who are conceded are the ones who can verbalize why they need to go there. Are you genuinely certain you need to go to that school? Just a single business college urges all candidates to visit grounds (and meeting) before applying, and that school is Tuck, at Dartmouth. Most other b-schools state that you're free to visit, however they comprehend on the off chance that you can't, and they demand that meeting doesn't give anybody a bit of leeway. (Obviously, what we've quite recently talked about demonstrates an exceptionally solid bit of leeway, as far as the learning you'll increase about the school, which you can take care of into the expositions you'll be writing.)So for what reason does Tuck need you to swing by for a spell? We presume the principle explanation behind this is because of their area. They are up in the mountains, in Hanover, N.H., remote and expelled from everything. All that is going on at Tuck will be Tuck. It's a totally unique b-school understanding than you'd have at, state, NYU-Stern, which is progressively an assortment of enormous structures dispersed all through New York Citys Greenwich Village than a grounds in essence. The confirmations people at Tuck need to ensure that you comprehend what you're getting into before you get in. So they need you to visit, to see it for yourself, and potentially spare everybody some time on the off chance that you find it's not the opportune spot for you.School visits assist you with going past the MBA rankings, when choosing objective schools, to seeing how a school is separ ated. They can have a major effect for you in the whole procedure of applying. Visiting the school ahead of time of applying is to some degree equivalent to an instructive meeting that you may have while investigating another profession. You're doing your exploration, posing a few inquiries, checking whether it's a fit. You're kicking the tires, figuratively speaking. What's more, you may really find that you would prefer not to go there. We had a customer visit UC-Berkeley once. Subsequently, she flew back home to New York feeling more dedicated than any other time in recent memory to go to Columbia (and truly, she got in). Haas wasn't for her. She never would've realized that without investing the energy to go find it for herself.Cruise over to the EssaySnark blog for more exhortation on school visits and applying to Tuck, NYU-Stern, UC-Berkeley Haas, Columbia, Harvard... furthermore, some other extraordinary MBA program.

How to Write Your Resume in Reverse Chronological Order

How to Write Your Resume in Reverse Chronological OrderValerie asked me to write her resume backwards. She wanted to use the chronological order of her job history instead of the alphabetical. She also wanted to avoid using keywords such as 'interview,' 'administration,' and 'sales.' She also wanted to avoid 'manager' as well. Her problem was that Joe couldn't remember everything. I thought that this was a wonderful idea and thought it would be pretty neat to see how that would work. Valerie wanted to write her resume in reverse chronological order. I told her that it would be a good idea if she wrote her job history in reverse chronological order. Here's how I did it.The first thing I did was make a list of job histories. I started by using the alphabetical order of her career and then did a reverse chronological list by using each alphabetical word one time and then another time. I divided each of the jobs by years so that she could do them in reverse chronological order. After she h ad put together her reverse chronological list, I asked her to go through it again. I told her that if she didn't understand something, we should put the keywords down next to the problem. If she didn't understand what it meant, we would use phrases like 'first-year employees'keywords.' Once she went through the list again, she asked me how she felt about doing it in reverse chronological order. In reverse chronological order, I thought it would be really cool if she wrote her job history starting at the top and going down. I also suggested that she write it with three different sections: where she has worked. This would give her a sense of where she started her career and a sense of where she is at in her career. Then I asked her to start at the bottom and go up and write out her entire resume in reverse chronological order. It might seem like a lot of time and effort for someone who knows what she is doing but it is very simple. The benefits that I saw from using reverse chronologic al order were that it made her more creative and her resume would be much more personal. She didn't have to worry about words like 'interview'administration' but she did have to include her job title and her job responsibilities and the duties she has performed. That was all it took to make her resume more personal.Because it was written in reverse chronological order, she could also choose the types of phrases that she wanted in her resume. If she wanted to include her real name, she could have it in there. So, if you are someone who has written a resume before, but can't remember where you worked, the easiest way to remember it is to write it backwards. It will take you less time than you think and will help you put your resume into reverse chronological order, just like Valerie did.

When You Dont Say It All In A Job Interview

When You Dont Say It All In A Job Interview What do you do if you had a job interview that goes pretty well, but after the interview theres at least one question that nags at you. Not the question, but the how you answered it.  Its the familiar taste of regret. Oh, I should have answered this way, I should have said that! The big question is, now what? Do you go back to the interviewer and clarify it?  The answer is maybe. Does it really matter? Did you really mess it up? Is your other answer so much better that it merits another point of communication? Or just a little better? Dont get me wrong, I like points of communication, but you have to be careful that you take the opportunity to communicate with the interviewer with something that will be impactful the most impactful! I dont want to scare you away from communicating with people who  in any other situation are your peers and colleagues, but I want to encourage you to reach out with information that can have a real influence. The best suggestion I heard in this situation is to include your alternative answer in the follow-up you do after your interview. You are doing that, right? For example, lets say you were asked tell me about your most successful project youve worked on, and why was it successful? Your answer was okay it was fine.  But after the interview the question nags and nags at you, and having thought about your career you think of a few other answers.  In the follow-up, you might say something like: John, thank you for the opportunity to talk about the product manager opening you have at your company. Im very interested in this role and think that I can add a lot of value to your team, and the direction of your product.  I look forward to the next steps in your interview process, and welcome any follow-up questions. In our interview you asked me about the most successful product I have managed. I talked about XYZ, which of course Im very proud of. There are a couple of other products that I worked on earlier in my career that I didnt think about when you asked, but Ive thought a lot about it since then.  The first was ___________.. Here is why this is so powerful.  First, most candidates dont send any follow-up.  When you do, no matter what you say, you will stand out as different. Second, in this follow-up, instead of saying what the interviewer (aka decision maker or influencer) is expecting, and what other people write, you are carrying on the conversation. You are reminding them who you are, what your story was (from your first answer), and then going on to say and thats not all here are some other great things you should know. One of the problems with the job search process, from the job seekers perspective, is that a resume does not represent all of the breadth (amount of things a person can do, has done, skills, abilities, etc.) and depth (length of experience, amount of expertise).  Lets say that you have a lot of breadth and a lot of depth and you have a few tools that help you convey the scope of your breadth and depth. Namely, your resume and the interview. Can you see the problem here? When your resume is one or two pages, providing a very summarized view of your awesomeness. When your interview is 45 minutes (give or take), you dont get to go to the extent of your breadth, or the end of your depth.  You get to convey a few snapshots points in your career, but 45 minutes isnt enough time to really tell your story, is it? How, then, can you fill in the gaps? A follow-up letter, like the example I shared above, is a great way to do that.  Also, a great LinkedIn Profile with mini-stories that fill in the blanks.  Having a brand such that others talk about you (the right way) and perhaps a blog (that can really fill in the gaps on breadth and depth) and perhaps an about.me page all of those are tools to help you go from someone who is maybe right for this position to someone who is, no doubt, without a question, right for the position! Writing a Resume For a Second Job

Writing a Resume For a Second JobWriting a resume for a second job is becoming more important. Why? Because it's your first job, and you are still figuring out what you want to do with the rest of your life.No one knows how you plan to get out of your job and find another job. If you had a boss who told you to become an accountant or some other type of professional, you might think that it's going to be easy to find a job. But, that's not the case. There are all kinds of restrictions on who can hire you, and if you already have a second job, there might not be any reason to consider going back to school. You're probably in pretty good shape if you're earning a second income and earning a salary. The bottom line is that you've already proved that you can handle money and get things done. What more do you need to prove that you can handle your second job? A resume for a second job doesn't have to be much different than your first. In fact, in many cases, you can write it with fewer deta ils because you've already written the first one.Jobs change all the time. Maybe your old job is gone or maybe it was a challenge for you and your co-workers. Maybe you still think it was the best job you ever had, but you don't have a second job, so it's no longer about how you can improve on it.Remember, you're older now and things have changed. You have a new family, new friends, and new responsibilities. All those details that you used to cover on your first resume have nothing to do with your second job. They might even be a drag on you and cause you to put things off when you need to. Go ahead and give yourself some wiggle room.Writing a resume for a second job should be just as comprehensive as your first one. The hard part will be putting the whole thing together. It will take you a little while to get it all in one place. Try to stick to one subject each time so you'll get it all in one place at a time.Don't just throw everything on the resume. It's much better to pick up o ne thing and look at it and say, 'Oh yeah, I did that before.' But when you get down to it, you're trying to find a way to communicate with the company to see if they would hire you. So, give them a little something that you did before they got to you. When you submit your resume, you'll probably also get a letter of recommendation from your former employer. Make sure you follow the rules about including your letter. Your original resume was sent to the company where you first got the job, and your letter needs to go to them now. Get their permission to forward it to them. If you haven't gotten a letter from them in six months, call them up and ask.

Branch out to find work you love

Branch out to find work you love When you look for a job or change careers, what youre really looking for is a way to improve things in your life. But its hard to figure out what will really make things better and what will only make things worse. There are some things we all know: People who are in love are happier, and people who are chronically unemployed are less happy. But most of us arent dealing with such clear-cut extremes. Most of us ask ourselves on a regular basis, Whats the best kind of work situation for me? Yes, were all unique, but in truth we arent as unique as we think we are. So there are some rules we can all live by when looking for work well love. Liking What You Have Forget the deep analysis. Our brains are simply not optimized to figure out what well like. Instead, theyre optimized to figure out how to like what we have. This helps us on an evolutionary basis: We eat whats available, we take care of whatever kids we get, and so on. It doesnt help us in a job hunt, where we have to guess what we would like if we had it. Daniel Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard, spent his whole career studying this sort of problem and published his findings in Stumbling on Happiness. Gilbert concludes that were basically unable to know if well like a job until we try it, so self-analysis and market analysis arent going to get you very far. Start trying stuff. You dont have to quit your job to try things. Try new stuff on the weekend, volunteer for a project part-time, or ask for a temporary appointment to another department, for example. Be creative in how you learn about yourself. A job change doesnt have to be now or never it can be a process. That said, here are some guidelines you can use for deciding what youre going to try: • Dont go to grad school for humanities. You would have had a  better chance surviving on the Titanic  than getting a tenure-track professorship in the humanities. The competition for these jobs is fierce, and very few corporate jobs give preference to someone who has a masters in, say, early American history. • Dont be a lawyer. Suicide is among the  leading causes  of premature death among lawyers. You can tell yourself youll be different, but statistically speaking, you probably wont be. And while most lawyers dont kill themselves, this doesnt bode well for law being your dream career. • Look for control over your work. You might think that a manageable workload makes for a good job. But stress doesnt actually make for a bad job. In fact, some people do very well in high-stress situations. Some even do their best work that way. What drives people to burn out  is when they work very hard but cant meet their goals. The people most likely to burn out from their jobs, then, are those who are supposed to help children in helpless situations (at hospitals, for example) but cant stop the pain. Entrepreneurs, however, are known for working 18-hour days, and frequently love their work because theyre accomplishing something that excites them. So the most important thing about enjoying your work, according to Alan Krueger, a professor of psychology at Princeton University, is having control over it when you do it, how you do it, and what you accomplish. People really like to be able to control the thermostat themselves, Krueger says. • Work where you can find a friend. If you have one good friend at work, its a really  good bet that youll like your job, according to a Gallup study published in the book Vital Friends by Tim Rath. Take a look at the place youre thinking of working. Do the people there look happy? Workplaces that promote friendship are more productive, and more fulfilling. There are a lot of ways to judge whether or not youll be likely to make a friend at a new job. But one factor we often forget is architecture. Office space that promotes collaboration and taking a moment to say hi is space that is good for making friends. • Dont work with jerks. Conversations that are insulting have five times the impact on your day than positive conversations. Unfortunately, we have a great memory for the unpleasant. Daniel Gilberts research supports this, but Bob Sutton, a professor at Stanford University, specializes in the jerk at work. Sutton warns that if you work with jerks, you become one.  His book  gives advice on how to make sure you dont end up working with these toxic people, and his web site gives you a way to  test yourself  to see if youre a jerk yourself. After all, if youre the jerk, youre going to have a pretty hard time finding an office without one. Work Life vs. Life Life As you search for your new career, collecting advice as you go, remember that the stakes arent as high as you might think. A job is not your life. Your personal life is your life, and your job supports that. The people who are most overwhelmed with career choices are the ones who think a career makes a life. So dont be afraid to try a lot of options, and dont be afraid to relax a little.

Gen Y Women Is Crazy the New Normal

Gen Y Women Is Crazy the New Normal Ladies and Gentlemen, Id love your feedback on the topic of todays woman. Do we put too much pressure on ourselves?   Why do we want it all and is this a good thing, or not? Men: what do you think? Ill use my own life as an example. I passed crazy dog person a long time ago. My yellow lab Giada might as well be a human.   If you heard me talk to other dog owners at the park or saw me on a day-to-day basis youd understand what I mean. You might also laugh at conversations I have with my boyfriend about Giadas daycare plans, vet visits and special outtings. I passed crazy ideas person a long time ago as well. For a long time this was a setback- a thorn in my side.   Why?   Because I couldnt pick one idea and run with it.   Every week I had a new glorious idea that seemed to be the one.   I would get beyond excited about it, skip the due diligence part then have no idea where to start while maintaining this blog and my day job.   Then things would fizzle. Thanks to advice from my mentors and lots of reading, I am slowly learning how to handle all these ideas and do something with them- one at a time. Point 1 + 2 = my newest creation: chidogoan.com (coming soon!). This idea has been evolving in my notebooks for several months.   No matter how many good ideas I get, I always come back to this one- tweaking, researching, even (gasp!) writing a business plan. Lately, more than ever, Ive realized that my DNA is quitewell, special. I happen to be the spawn of two really happy recovering workaholics (they are also familyaholics, if thats even a word).   When I was little, I used to wonder how the hell my Mom and Dad did it all.   I knew they loved their coffee, but it had to be more than that. Now I find myself doing the same thing they did: sometimes waking up at 4 in the morning because I want to work on my side hustle as much as humanly possible while maintaining a very busy day job and a life. Shit. Im 26 and Im already turning into my mother! My Mom seriously did it all.   She ran 3 successful companies over the years, made lunches with smiley faces on the napkins, stood out nationally in a very male dominated industry and then came home to do laundry and make spaghetti.   Im sure she had days where she felt like a chicken with her head cut off, but somehow it all worked out.   Although Im not a mother yet (well, not to a human at least)   I can already tell I have this crazy woman gene too. Like my Mom, I enjoy playing several parts: corporate career woman, entrepreneur and domestic diva all at once. Am I supposed to pick ONE (or maybe two) of these roles instead of all three? Is this the new normal? People Ive dated have suggested I relax and slow down. These people arent for me.   I like always having a project, overcoming a challenge and growing something thats my own.   I dont really like watching TV and it takes me a while to get into vacation mode while Im away. Whats wrong with that? Do other women embrace the chaos like me? Now my questions for you: How have Gen Y women voluntarily changed the role of women? Do you think a majority of Gen Y has side hustles because weve been brought up during a time of Corporate Collapse (Enron), September 11th and a recession? Are we using our side hustles as career insurance? Many Gen Y women say theyd rather work for themselves than climb to the top of the corporate ladder.   If this sounds like you, whats your motivation?
